What you do, or do not do -- it's your Report Card!

I value my performance, customer satisfaction, and professional integrity. And, actually, that is what I love about the Real Estate industry in general, be it a Realtor, home stager, mortgage lender, appraiser, or inspector; I have been around long enough to see that the ones that take pride in their work, strive to improve, and continually monitor there perceived value, are the ones that survive... regardless of market conditions.

There are many things a home stager can do to better their business. Here's are four of my favorites:

•Be a member of the home staging Trade Organization. I belong to both RESA and ASHSR. My preference is RESA as they are emerging as the universal member run professional trade organization for home stagers. I am firm about this. There are so many business benefits available to you through trade organization memberships. But more importantly, if you value your professional performance, your customer satisfaction and professional integrity, how serious are you really if you do not belong to and support the trade organization that represents the very industry you are trying to excel in?

•Write and post information about the value of home staging -- this helps to demonstrate that you are an expert in your field. (active rain is my favorite means for this, although I use some others)

•Post photo examples of your work -- a good current portfolio and a good detailed web site are invaluable to success in this business. A blog detailing your work with photos is also key. (again, my favorite means for this is www.activerain.com)

•Go out of your way to collect client feedback. This makes a statement that you care about their satisfaction. And, this lets you know how they liked your services. It also provides you with testimonies regarding your services. I use a form that I designed and call it my "Report Card". Surprisingly, almost 100% of clients return the completed form to me without any follow up on my part. They seem eager to share their pleasant and successful experience. Here's one I received back today (and, yes, I blushed):

I have a section in the back of my portfolio book that has probably 50 to 75 or more of my Report Cards for prospective clients to flip through. My report cards are also good to photo copy and mail to the Realtor who listed the property. The Realtor can then use the report card to help show clients the value and concept of home staging.

Everything you do, as it relates to your business, should make a positive statement about your performance potential, your customer satisfaction, and professional integrity.

But remember -- everything you do not do can also make strong statements about your performance potential, your customer satisfaction, and professional integrity.
